Open Water Swimming – Terms and Conditions


Pillaton Hall Farm is delighted to welcome you to our open water swimming venue.  To make this experience safe and enjoyable we ask that you read and adhere to the following terms and conditions:

  • All swimmers must register for a NOWCA membership; this is currently £15.00 annually.  Membership is to be arranged directly with NOWCA.
  • All swimmers entering the water at Pillaton Hall Farm do so at their own risk.  Please ensure that you fully understand the dangers associated with swimming in open water, with the potential for personal injury and property loss.
  • Swimmers must not get in the pool until a member of staff authorises them to.  They must enter safely and adhere to the specific swimming session times; and exit the water when asked to.  Swimmers are to follow all rules and instructions from Pillaton Hall Farm and its staff members.
  • All swimmers must wear their individual NOWCA wristbands and use them to register themselves in and out of the water by scanning them on entry and exit.
  • All swimmers must bring their own tow float and ensure that it is attached to them when in the water.
  • Wetsuits are strongly recommended when the water temperature is below 22 degrees as they give you warmth and buoyancy.
  • Bright swimming headwear must be worn; this will make you more visible when in the water.
  • Goggles are recommended; though not compulsory.  Neoprene gloves and socks are permitted to be worn.
  • It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that their kit is suitable and safe for purpose.
  • Swimmers must enter and exit the water at the specified place and stay within the designated swim route; unless instructed otherwise by a member of staff.
  • Our water is 100 metres x 25 metres; buoyancy aids are essential as you need to be able to float on the surface until our lifeguard reaches you in the event of an emergency.
  • Swimming is clockwise round the course, do not obstruct or interfere with other swimmers.
  • All participants must be able to swim unaided for 25 metres (1 length of a standard indoor pool).
  • All swimmers must be physically and mentally fit and have no pre-existing medical conditions that would affect them swimming in open water.
  • You must not swim if you have any known medical conditions that would make open water swimming unsafe for you.
  • You must not swim if you are feeling unwell.  If a swimmer becomes unwell during a session; they must leave the water immediately and inform a member of staff.
  • In the event of difficulty; swimmers must roll on to their back and signal for rescue by waving one arm in the air.
  • Do not dive in the water from the side, entry/exit platform or boat.
  • You are not permitted to swim at Pillaton Hall Farm unless authorised by the management and staff during one of the official sessions.
  • All sessions must be booked in advance.
  • Each session includes time to use our facilities before and after your swim.
  • All bookings must be made through NOWCA using the ACTIO App.  Payment must be made in advance at the time of booking and is non-refundable.
  • Emergency contact details must be provided when you register with NOWCA and any amendments or changes reported immediately.
  • We reserve the right to close the pool due to fast-changing weather conditions, current Covid regulations, staffing issues or to amend the course dimensions for safety or maintenance.  We will endeavour to give as much notice as possible.  Updates will be announced on the website and social media.  
  • If a session has to be cancelled by us; you will be issued with a credit.  This also applies for any bookings you have to cancel due to Covid (proof of a positive test or the need to isolate will be required).
  • Any sessions cancelled by the customer are non-refundable or transferable.
  • All children under the age of 16 must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times whilst on the site; as per our campsite terms and conditions.
  • We allow children aged 8 and over to participate; however please be aware that children are not permitted to enter the water if the temperature is below 14 degrees.  Please only make a booking for your child if you know that the water temperature is going to be above 14 degrees.
  • All children under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied in the water by an adult.  Please note that they will not be permitted to enter the water without an adult; standing at the waters edge is not sufficient.
  • Children aged 8 to 15 years must wear a wetsuit, lifejacket, brightly coloured swimming hat and use a tow float.
  • Participants agree to assign and grant permission for Pillaton Hall Farm to use and publish any photography or video made or taken whilst open water swimming at our venue.
  • Our facilities block will be available and offers underfloor heating, toilets, showers and changing areas.  The facilities block is a 165 metre walk from the water, this will help you to get your temperature level up before you have a shower.  Do not have a hot shower until your body temperature has regulated.
  • Hot drinks, cold drinks and snacks are available from Dotties takeaway or the vending machines located in the entrance of the facilities block and the campsite shop.
  • The campsite shop will be open.
  • Dogs are not permitted in the water.  Dogs can be brought to the session; however, they must remain on a lead with an adult, they cannot be left unattended.  
  • Spectators are welcome but must be travelling in the same vehicle as the swimmer.  Any additional vehicles would need to be booked on as a visitor and a £10 charge per car will apply, as per our visitor terms and conditions.
  • Free parking is available at your own risk.  Please only park in the designated areas. 
  • The participant is fully responsible for their actions whilst attending Pillaton Hall Farm; this includes entry and exit onto the site and any other unrelated swimming activities.
  • Pillaton Hall Farm do not accept responsibility for the actions of the participant; nor the consequences of their actions.  If a participant breaks the rules resulting in being asked to leave or them being banned there will be no refund.
  • All items left at the side of the water are left at the owner’s risk; Pillaton Hall Farm takes no responsibility for any missing or damaged items.
  • In the unlikely event of injury, accident, loss or damage, regardless of however it may be caused, no responsibility whatsoever will be attached to the owners, staff or any persons involved in the organisation at Pillaton Hall Farm.
  • Pillaton Hall Farm and their staff are waived, released and discharged from all claims made against them.
  • We expect all our staff and guests to act in a courteous and considerate manner to anyone staying, visiting or working at Pillaton Hall Farm.
  • Threatening behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated; you will be asked to leave the site immediately with no refund.
  • The management reserves the right to make changes to the terms and conditions at any time; the updated version will be uploaded to the website.


  • Pillaton Hall Farm ask that you follow and adhere to all current Covid-19 government guidelines, restrictions and law.  We appreciate that these are ever changing; however, Pillaton Hall Farm will be following the latest guidelines and will expect our open water swimmers to follow them too.
  • We ask that all our open water swimmers respect each other and our staff and adhere to the guidelines set by the government for everyone’s safety and peace of mind.  Anyone not following the guidelines will be asked to leave the site.
  • If you have symptoms, are self-isolating or have tested positive you need to contact the office to arrange for a credit on your account.  Please note that official proof of testing positive will need to be sent before a credit is issued.
  • If the government advice changes and we are forced to close at the time of your booked session you will be given a credit.
  • No refunds will be issued.
  • There can be a serious risk to your health if you contract coronavirus.  This can lead you to suffer from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), mental health issues like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, impaired lung function which can negatively affect other organs like the heart, kidneys and brain plus other significant long-term health issues that may last after getting over the infection.  Please be aware of these side effects if you choose to visit us for open water swimming.
  • The above measures form part of our terms and conditions during this time and we reserve the right to update them in accordance with government guidelines.

By booking an open water swimming session you are agreeing to the following:

  •  To adhere to all of the terms and conditions.
  • That you are aware of all risks involved in open water swimming and that you participate at your own risk.
  • That Pillaton Hall Farm, the owners, employees, agents, contractors or assigns do not accept any responsibility for injury, death or any other loss suffered to the extent that it results from the swimmers conduct or any matter or condition under their control that amounts to the swimmers own contributory negligence.
